Dr. Amerian and Dr. Anterasian Attend International Laser Meeting

Dr. Mary Lee Amerian and Dr. George Anterasian recently attended the annual meeting of the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery, which was held in Phoenix this year. This is the largest and most prestigious laser meeting in the world. We attend this laser meeting every year in order to ensure that we always offer our patients the best and most up to date treatments available.

Highlights of this year’s meeting included the following:

  • Treat to Transformation
“Treat to Transformation” refers to a new way of approaching Coolsculpting treatment planning. The goal of “Treat to Transformation” is to take advantage of Coolsculpting’s ability to non-invasively reduce fat in order to give patients the most aesthetically pleasing body contour possible. With this new approach, we look at the body as a whole as we design the treatment plan. With “Treat to Transformation,” somewhat more Coolsculpting treatments may be required to achieve the desired results. This is discussed with patients in advance. However, with the new “Treat to Transformation” approach, we are achieving much better results than we achieved in the past. In fact, in many cases “Treat to Transformation” results come close to the results that are achieved with liposuction.
  • Rejuvenation of the eyes and eyelids
We attended an in-depth discussion of the non-surgical rejuvenation of the eyes and eyelids. The seminar emphasized that eMatrix, Fraxel Restore, and Fraxel Repair lasers are excellent methods of rejuvenating these tissues. In addition, the speakers emphasized the point that the best results are obtained by combining these treatments with Botox and dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Belotero to gain additional softening of wrinkles and folds.
The section that follows below will discuss eyelid rejuvenation in more detail.

Non-Surgical Eyelid Tightening and Eyelid Rejuvenation

During the past few years, there have been dramatic and revolutionary advances in laser technology. By applying these new technologies to the eyelids, it has become possible to rejuvenate and tighten the eyelid skin in nearly all patients without surgery. Today, surgery only needs to be done on the most severely aged eyelids.

In order to match the correct eyelid rejuvenation procedure to the right patient, we divide our eyelid rejuvenation patients into two groups, those with mild to moderate eyelid laxity and those with severe laxity. Patients who have mild to moderate eyelid laxity are best treated with eMatrix sublative rejuvenation. eMatrix sublative rejuvenation is an excellent way of rejuvenating the skin around the eyes without surgery. It will tighten the skin, improve the crow’s feet lines around the eyes, reduce lower eyelid wrinkles, and elevate the eyebrows resulting in smoother, brighter, and more youthful appearing skin. The eyes also appear to be more open and youthful following treatment.

The typical treatment protocol is 3 treatment sessions given at 4 – 6 week intervals. The improvement in the skin can be seen immediately after the completion of treatment, and the results continue to improve for the following six to twelve months. eMatrix sublative rejuvenation is an FDA approved procedure, and it is suitable for all skin types and all skin colors.

Patients with more severe laxity are best treated with the Fraxel Repair laser. With the Fraxel Repair, patients obtain significant tightening of their eyelid tissues and softening of the crow’s feet lines in a single procedure. This is a welcome advance. Fraxel Repair eyelid treatment can be done by itself or it may be combined with treatment of the face. Patients who undergo Fraxel Repair treatment should be prepared for four to five days of healing following the procedure.

eMatrix sublative eyelid treatment and eyelid Fraxel Repair stimulate the production of new collagen in the eyelid skin and promote tissue tightening. This new collagen is living tissue, and for this reason, the improvement in the eyelids following any of these treatments is long lasting and should persist for years.

Regardless of which technology is used to treat the eyelids, the rejuvenation may be further enhanced with Botox and dermal fillers. Botox is used to soften the lines around the eyes (the crow’s feet lines). Dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Belotero, and Prevelle are used to soften the depressions and folds that form below the eye (known as the tear trough) and to further soften the crow’s feet lines. By combining the eMatrix or the Fraxel Repair with Botox and dermal fillers, nearly all of our patients can achieve very natural eyelid tightening and rejuvenation without undergoing a surgical procedure.

We invite any of our patients who may be interested in non-surgical eyelid rejuvenation to contact our office and make an appointment with either Dr. Amerian or Dr. Anterasian.
