Photodynamic Photorejuvenation is an advanced technology that improves sun damaged skin, actinic keratoses (changes in the skin that can lead to skin cancers), and acne – all through the use of a topical agent and blue light.
It is a very safe procedure that has the advantage of treating the entire face at one time.
Dr. Amerian and Dr. Anterasian have a great deal of experience with these advanced techniques for improving the look and health of your skin.
Candidates for Photodynamic Photorejuvenation
Patients with sun damaged skin, moderate to severe acne, and actinic keratoses see excellent results from Photodynamic Photorejuvenation.
Patients who are pregnant should avoid this treatment method.
How Photodynamic Photorejuvenation Works
There are two types of Photodynamic treatments.
Photodynamic Photorejuvenation for actinic keratoses is performed with a topical photosensitizing agent called Levulan that is activated with blue-colored light. This results in a skin reaction that leads to a reduced number of sun damaged cells and a significant improvement in actinic keratoses. Levulan is a safe substance that consists of a 20% solution of Aminolevulinic acid and is a naturally occurring substance in the body.
Photodynamic Photorejuvenation for acne targets the overgrowth of bacteria and the excessive production of skin oil. The blue light activates the Levulan, which initiates a chemical reaction that leads to a reduction in the number of acne-causing bacteria and a reduction in the amount of oil production in the skin.
What to Expect During a Photodynamic Photorejuvenation Treatment
After cleansing the skin, the Levulan solution is applied for 30-60 minutes depending on what is being treated. The skin is then exposed to blue light of a specific wavelength for a period of 8-16 minutes to activate the Levulan and initiate the photodynamic process.
Most patients need 3-5 photodynamic treatments to achieve an optimal result.
Results of Photodynamic Photorejuvenation
The treatment reduces irregular skin pigmentation and improves actinic keratoses and acne. It provides a more uniform skin color, improved skin texture, and more youthful and healthier skin.
Some temporary redness, much like a mild sunburn, will occur after the treatment, but it will resolve within a few days and can be covered with make-up.
To avoid sun exposure, patients are advised to remain inside the remainder of the day after the procedure, as well as the next day.
