LASER HAIR REMOVAL IN LOS ANGELES, CA

WHAT IS IT

Laser hair removal utilizes laser energy to reduce and eliminate unwanted body and facial hair. It has the advantage of being able to treat small and large areas of unwanted hair at one time, and without the irritation associated with other hair removal treatments such as waxing, shaving, and electrolysis.

Lasers for hair removal first became available in 1996, and there have been many technological advances since then. Modern laser hair removal lasers can safely treat unwanted darker hair on patients of any skin type and any skin color. The most commonly treated areas are the back, arms, legs, armpits, upper lip, chin, and bikini line.

HOW IT WORKS

During a laser hair removal treatment, the laser energy is applied to the skin and is selectively taken up by the hair. The hair then transmits the energy into the hair follicle, where the energy is absorbed. The absorption of laser energy by the hair follicle leads to the eradication of functional hair follicles and permanent hair loss.

The hair removal laser works best on darker colored hair. This promotes absorption of the laser energy by the hair and not by the skin. For this reason, patients with unwanted blonde, white, or gray hair, and most red hair, are not advised to undergo laser hair removal.

Laser hair removal is not generally as painful as shaving, plucking or electrolysis, but you will feel a slight snap against the skin as the laser energy is applied. A numbing cream can be used prior to the treatment if desired, but most patients will not require numbing.

There is no downtime after a laser hair removal treatment. Patients can resume all of their normal activities immediately after leaving the office. The armpit and bikini areas are generally treated at 4-6 week intervals, the face at 6-week intervals, and the trunk, arms, and legs at 8-10 week intervals.

RESULTS

You can expect approximately 30% reduction in hair with each treatment. For this reason, multiple treatments are always necessary to achieve the desired reduction in hair in a given body area. In general, four or more treatments are required at each site to achieve maximum hair growth reduction.

These treatments are spaced one to three months apart, and the effects of laser hair removal can last for several months to several years.

Laser hair removal has no downtime, but you may experience some minor redness and swelling afterward. Any irritation is generally milder than after other non-laser hair removal methods.

FAQ

Laser hair removal is completely safe when performed by an experienced practitioner using a modern hair removal laser. Modern hair removal lasers allow patients of all skin types and all skin colors to be safely treated.
After completing a series of treatments, patients can expect about an 80% reduction in hair in the treated areas.
Laser hair removal will leave the skin looking smoother and silkier. It enables larger areas of the body to be efficiently and effectively treated. In addition, there is minimal discomfort with laser hair removal. Laser hair removal nearly eliminates the need for waxing, plucking, and electrolysis.
Every hair removal patient will require a series of laser treatments to achieve an optimum result. Generally, patients will require about 4-6 laser treatments to obtain the desired outcome.
The spacing of the treatments depends on the area being treated. The armpit and bikini areas are generally treated at 4-6 week intervals, the face at 6-week intervals, and the trunk, arms, and legs at 8-10 week intervals.
Patients should avoid sun exposure during the two weeks prior to treatment. In addition, they should not bleach, pluck, thread, have electrolysis, or wax their hair during this period. The hair should be in its normal undisturbed condition. However, patients may shave their hair one or two days prior to the treatment.
The length of time depends on the size of the area or areas being treated. The procedure can take from 5 minutes for a small area such as the upper lip to an hour for large areas like the upper and lower legs or back.
In general, laser hair removal is not a painful procedure. Sensitive patients can numb with numbing cream prior to the procedure but most patients will not need this. Our Candela Gentlelase hair removal laser delivers a cooling spray to the skin to chill the skin immediately prior to the application of the laser pulse. This contributes to the comfort of the procedure.
Patients should try to minimize their sun exposure after laser hair removal. Use sunscreen, wear a hat, and generally try to be indoors to protect the skin from the sun.
No. There is absolutely no downtime after laser hair removal. Patients can resume all of their normal activities immediately after leaving the office.
The Candela Gentlelase laser is a very effective laser hair removal system. Because it contains two different lasers within one medical device, it can treat patients of any skin type and any skin color. Patients with lighter skin tones such as Caucasians and other Europeans can make use of the Alexandrite laser in the device. The Alexandrite laser will very efficiently and safely remove hair without hurting the skin in these types of patients. Patients with darker skin tones such as Asians, Hispanics, Native Americans, and African Americans can be safely treated with the Yag laser that is also in the device.

In addition, the Gentlelase laser incorporates a cooling spray into its design. Referred to as a “dynamic cooling device,” the spray chills the skin immediately prior to the application of the laser pulse. This protects the skin and also contributes to a relatively painless procedure. The combination of all of these advantages has made the Candela Gentlelase laser the most commonly used laser hair removal system in the world.
