Laser Hair Removal has the advantage of treating large areas at one time without the irritation associated with conventional treatments such as waxing, shaving, and electrolysis. Lasers for hair removal first became available in 1996, but there have been many technological advances since then. While there is still no permanent form of hair removal, the laser is the closest technique we have to that goal.
The most commonly treated areas are the back, legs, armpits, upper lip, chin, and bikini line.
Candidates for Laser Hair Removal
The hair removal laser works only on hair pigment that is darker than the surrounding skin. This contrast allows the hair to absorb more of the laser light. If the skin is darker than the hair, the skin absorbs more of the laser light, potentially leading to adverse skin reactions.
For this reason, patients with unwanted light blonde, white, or gray hair, and most red hair, are not advised to undergo laser hair removal. It is also important that patients not tan before their appointments.
How Laser Hair Removal Works
Laser hair removal works by using laser energy to destroy the hair follicle, thereby inhibiting future hair growth from the follicle.
What to Expect During Laser Hair Removal
Laser Hair Removal is not generally as painful as shaving, plucking or electrolysis, but you will feel a slight snap against the skin as the laser passes over. A numbing cream can be used prior to the treatment.
Results of Laser Hair Removal
You can expect approximately a 30% decrease in hair with each treatment. For this reason, multiple appointments are necessary to achieve the desired reduction in hair in a given body area. In general, three or more treatments are required at each site to achieve maximum hair growth reduction.
These treatments are spaced one to three months apart, and the effects of laser hair removal can last for several months to several years.
Laser Hair Removal requires no downtime, but you may experience some minor redness and inflammation afterward. Any irritation is generally milder than after traditional hair removal methods.
